Football: No. 12 Katy 35, Tompkins 0
Katy secures at least a share of the District 19-6A championship with third shutout in its last five games
November debuted with a typical ho-hum Friday night at Legacy Stadium.
No. 12 state-ranked Katy methodically romped Tompkins, 35-0. The Tigers’ 32nd consecutive district win secured at least a share of the District 19-6A title, their 15th in the last 16 seasons.
Just another workmanlike effort for a Katy team that has won seven consecutive games.
Winning never gets old. District titles certainly don’t.
“It’s just getting better every week, listening to our coaches,” senior defensive end/punter Adam Carter said. “Doing the things we need to do so we can produce like we need to. Small things impacting what we do.
“Like, tonight, we shut out one of the better teams in the district because we did what we were supposed to.”
Sounds simple enough. It’s anything but.
“It takes a lot of work to win,” coach Gary Joseph said. “We’ve been very fortunate. We’ve got great kids and great coaches. Great support from our administration. It doesn’t get old.”
Katy (8-1 overall, 7-0 19-6A) was coolly efficient against a Tompkins defense that is having a down year this season, ranking in the bottom third of 19-6A.
The Tigers compiled 429 total yards, averaging 8.3 yards per play. Katy rushed for 243 yards and threw for 186.
Starting junior running back Tremayne Hill returned to action after missing last week’s win over Paetow because of injury. Hill had 65 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
Sophomore Tony Manuel had 80 yards on four carries in just his second varsity game.
Senior receiver Israel Olotu-Judah caught seven passes for 77 yards to pace the Tigers’ aerial pursuit. Junior receiver Cade McCall caught a 70-yard touchdown.
Katy’s defense authored its third shutout of the season, all within the last five games. The Tigers have not allowed an offensive touchdown since Sept. 20 against Cinco Ranch.
Tompkins managed 262 total yards, averaging 4.5 yards per play. Sophomore running back Ethan Meadows had 76 rushing yards but needed 20 carries to do so.
Senior quarterback Justin Thierheimer completed 17 of 30 passes for 156 yards and an interception, averaging 5.2 yards per passing attempt.
Tompkins, which entered as the No. 3 ranked offense in 19-6A, averaging 31.4 points on 365.1 yards per game, had not been shutout this season prior to Friday.
Senior outside linebacker Jareem Pendleton had a blocked punt in Tompkins territory that led to Katy’s first touchdown of the game, a 3-yard run by Hill. Junior defensive back Joshua Garcia had an interception of Thierheimer late in the first half that led to a Joshua Smith 6-yard touchdown run.
Katy can secure the outright district championship with a win over Mayde Creek next week. The Rams have never beaten the Tigers.
