Football postgame: Cinco Ranch 55, Taylor 21
Cougars jump out to 28-point first quarter lead in what could end up a pivotal win with considerable playoff implications
It took only one quarter for Cinco Ranch to nix any ills lingering from a tough loss to Katy last week.
Taylor provided exactly what the Cougars needed.
Cinco Ranch got right again Thursday, and quickly, in a 55-21 rout of Taylor at Rhodes Stadium. The Cougars led 28-0 after the first quarter, and 41-7 at halftime.
Cinco Ranch averaged 12.1 yards per play in the first half. The Cougars scored touchdowns on their first four possessions, and six of eight through the first two quarters.
In a game that could have considerable District 19-6A playoff implications down the stretch, the Cougars improved to 2-1 in 19-6A, 2-3 overall. The Mustangs dropped to 1-2 in 19-6A, 2-3 overall.
Taylor entered ranked second in 19-6A in total defense, allowing 15.3 points on 170.5 yards per game through the first four games, but it was Cinco Ranch’s third-ranked offense (22.8 points on 363.8 yards per game) that asserted itself early and often.
By halftime, the Cougars gashed the Mustangs’ defense for 328 total yards, 290 passing. Senior quarterback Charlie Adamoli completed 13 of 16 passes for 290 yards and four touchdowns before sitting the second half.
Cinco Ranch finished with 497 total yards, 427 through the air.
Senior receiver Scott Eckel had 10 catches for 179 yards, finishing one catch shy of the program single-game record. He did not play the fourth quarter.
Junior receiver Drew Tureau had three catches for 36 yards. All three went for touchdowns.
Taylor had 301 total yards, 169 of those coming in the second half. Junior running back Xavier Haynes was the lone bright spot for the Mustangs, carrying the ball 23 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns.
Taylor entered the game last in 19-6A in turnover ratio at a minus-6 (five takeaways to 11 giveaways). The Mustangs did not help that cause against Cinco Ranch, turning the ball over three times (two interceptions and a fumble) in the first half.
Adamoli, Eckel and senior linebacker and team captain Luke Mathiasmeier spoke about Cinco Ranch’s big win afterward.
