Football postgame: Tompkins 48, Mayde Creek 27
Falcons snap three-game losing skid behind sophomore Ethan Meadows' 253 total yards and six total TDs
Fresh off an open week, with a chance to reset following a tough 1-3 start to the season, Tompkins coach Todd McVey offered his team some food for thought heading into this week’s game against Mayde Creek.
“I told them a lot of guys before them have done a lot of good things here, and they have high expectations of you to continue that process,” McVey said. “You all are writing your own legacy. It’s on you.
“What are they going to say about y’all at the end of the season? I want them to say great things about this team just like they have in the past. I think they’re taking that to heart.”
Indeed, the Falcons issued a convincing response Thursday night.
Tompkins snapped its three-game losing streak with a 48-27 win over Mayde Creek at Rhodes Stadium. The Falcons started slow before outscoring the Rams 35-14 over the game’s final 30 minutes of play.
Tompkins improved to 2-3 overall, 1-2 in District 19-6A. The Falcons are 9-2 all-time versus Mayde Creek and have won the last seven meetings.
Mayde Creek suffered its third straight loss and is 3-3 overall, 1-2 in 19-6A.
Sophomore running back Ethan Meadows was phenomenal for the Falcons all night long, authoring a breakthrough performance in his fifth varsity game.
Against a vaunted Rams defensive front, Meadows rushed for 193 yards and four touchdowns on 27 carries, and added 60 yards and two touchdowns on five catches.
In all, Meadows totaled 253 yards and six touchdowns on 32 touches. He averaged 7.9 yards per touch.
Meadows entered the game fifth in 19-6A in rushing. He speared a prolific offensive night for the Falcons, who chewed up a Rams defense that entered fifth in 19-6A, allowing 15.6 points on 277.8 yards per game.
Tompkins totaled 590 yards and averaged 18.4 yards per play.
Aside from Meadows, senior quarterback Justin Thierheimer enjoyed his best outing of the season, completing 18 of 24 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns to no interceptions, while rushing for 108 yards on nine carries.
Senior receiver K.J. Madison added 87 yards and a touchdown on four catches. Senior receiver Adebisi Bello had 71 yards on five catches.
Mayde Creek, ranked last in 19-6A in total offense at 9.2 points per game coming into the night, gave Tompkins fits early as it introduced receiver/athlete Trey Williams as its starting quarterback.
It was a tied game at 13-13 when Williams found sophomore receiver Chad Nelson on a 74-yard catch-and-run score with 6:39 left in the second quarter. It was the second of Williams’ four passing touchdowns.
But the Rams’ offense was deemed one-dimensional. Mayde Creek rushed for just 32 yards on 16 carries.
Williams was impressive, completing 20 of 38 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns to two interceptions (both coming in the final minutes of the fourth quarter as the Rams were in desperation mode). But with Mayde Creek’s running game finding no success, the Falcons were able to stymie Williams and the passing game in the second half.
Williams completed 8 of 19 passes for 88 yards in the second half. He averaged 11.8 yards per pass attempt in the first half, but just 4.6 in the second.
Rams senior receiver Daylin Robinson had 179 yards and two touchdowns on nine catches. Nelson added 110 yards and two touchdowns on seven catches.
It was the best offensive showing of the season for Mayde Creek, which has a lot to build on going into its open week. Coming into the game, the Rams’ previous single-game best in points came in an 18-14 Week 1 win against Fort Bend Travis.
Tompkins’ Meadows and Thierheimer spoke more about their respective outings, the win coming off an open week, and more afterward.
