Volleyball: Fulshear sweeps Cinco Ranch, wins regional championship in first year of Class 6A competition
Fulshear earns fourth regional title in six years, ousts last year's Class 6A state finalist
For the second straight season, Fulshear volleyball is a regional champion.
Just in a higher, tougher classification this year.
The Chargers continue to make the move from Class 5A to 6A this year look seamless, and they showed it in a demonstrative way Friday evening.
Fulshear thwarted Cinco Ranch 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-18) in the Class 6A-Division I Region III final at the Merrell Center.
Cinco Ranch, a 6A state finalist last season, entered ranked No. 1 in 6A-DI by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Fulshear was ranked fifth.
All the Chargers did was sweep a Cougars team that had lost 16 sets, total, all season.
Fulshear is 38-6 and advances to play Austin Westlake (32-17) early next week in the state semifinal. Westlake is in the state semis for the first time since 2009.
Fulshear is seeking a second state championship in six years, having won the 4A title in 2019.
Senior outside hitter Bailey Warren, a Wake Forest signee, had a team-high 16 kills.
She had plenty of help.
Senior setter Alexys James had nine points. Senior right side hitter Lauren Witte had eight points.
Fulshear’s front row of sophomore Arayah Watson (11 points), junior Daisy Voskuhl (eight points) sophomore Shayne Voskuhl (five points) and senior Yosala Adeleke (four points) controlled the match. The Chargers are undersized—only one player stands taller than 6-feet—but their athleticism, speed and quickness make up for it, and it was a clear advantage at the net.
Cinco Ranch, meanwhile, had little going for its attack other than senior outside hitter Gabriella Martinez. Martinez, a California Baptist signee, had a game-high 18 points. But no other Cougar had more than six.
Fulshear’s Warren and James talked about the win, their impressive success in their first year of Class 6A competition and more after the game.
